Round Area Rugs: Defining Your Style

Choosing round area rugs is a return to an earlier style era, yet one that can make your rooms appear fresh and appealing. Who says area rugs have to be rectangular? Why not consider adding a round accent rug to call attention to an area of interest? You can put a round rug in the center of a conversation area, or place it atop the wall-to-wall carpet for protection or accent.

The circular rugs draw the eye in a way that rectangular rugs can never do. They are available in many sizes, so they can become the floor covering for all but the corners or a room if you prefer. Most decorators use them in more limited sizes to add a color spot, to define a theme or to add a pattern to an otherwise blah room.

Rugs can add warmth visually to a room, but they can also soften the geometric shapes and hard surfaces of a hardwood, concrete or tile floor. Decor is all about mixing and matching textures and shapes and tying it together with color and pattern. Place round accent rugs in high wear areas such as in a seating area where the feet are placed. A circular rug can be placed under a dining room table to contrast shapes or to echo the shape of the table.

Rugs help to prevent excessive wear to hardwood floors. Hardwood floors are meant to last indefinitely, but they can become worn if not protected against heavy traffic. When a rug is placed in an area, an individual is likely to skirt the rug to avoid tripping. This keeps traffic off the designated area. On the other hand, a round rug defining a conversation area in your living room or family room will be inviting.

Round area rugs are perfect for changing your room decor from one season to another. They are a nice compromise between hard surface floors and wall-to-wall carpet. Because they tend to be less expensive than carpeting, they can be replaced at the first sign of wear.
